Vaginoplasty works by surgically tightening, creating, or rebuilding the vaginal canal, depending on the needs of the patients. It is performed depending on the reasons why they need the surgery. It may be due to trauma, giving birth, medical conditions, gender affirmation, or cosmetic purposes.

What is the difference between vaginoplasty to labiaplasty?

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure to help tighten, repair, or create a vagina while focused on reshaping only the outer vaginal lips in the vaginal part.

During the day of the operations, your anaesthesiologist will administer general anaesthesia; this will make you fall asleep during the operations and not feel any pain. The surgical site will be prepared and cleansed to avoid risks of infections. The process will depend on what type of surgery you’re undergoing and the doctor’s technique as well. You will be monitored for any problems that may arise during the operations, most especially your vital signs.

Your surgeon will close the incision with stitches and apply wound covering to protect the area. To help the patient when urinating during the recovery period, a catheter may also be used.

After the operations, you will be monitored in the recovery room to make sure everything is good before your doctor allows you to come home.

How long does the process last?

The kind of surgery, methods, and techniques used are some of the things that affect the length of the vaginoplasty process. Usually, it will take 9 hours or more to complete the procedure.

When performed by a qualified and well-experienced surgeon, vaginoplasty can be safe. However, because it is done surgically, there are possible risks of side effects and complications such as infection, bleeding, changes in sensation, scarring, pain or discomfort, as well as complications with healing.

Is it hurtful?

Vaginoplasty uses general anaesthesia, making the patients feel no pain during the procedure. It is normal to feel discomfort after the operations, but it can be managed by pain medication prescribed by your surgeon.

Vaginoplasty doesn’t directly affect fertility; the procedure doesn’t invade the reproductive system as it only works outside the vaginal walls.

Are the results permanent?

The results may vary depending on the type of surgery you have. Reconstructive vaginoplasty may be permanent but needs some follow-up procedures or additional surgeries. The tightness of cosmetic vaginoplasty may be decreased over time, maintenance treatment should be done. Although gender-affirming procedures can be permanent, they need regular dilation to maintain their depth, and sometimes additional surgeries may be needed for proper functioning. When should I call my doctor after my vaginoplasty?
